Sapphire Blue by Kerstin Gier

Amazon Synopsis: Gwen’s life has been a rollercoaster since she discovered she was the Ruby, the final member of the secret time-traveling Circle of Twelve. In between searching through history for the other time-travelers and asking for a bit of their blood (gross!), she’s been trying to figure out what all the mysteries and prophecies surrounding the Circle really mean.
At least Gwen has plenty of help. Her best friend Lesley follows every lead diligently on the Internet. James the ghost teaches Gwen how to fit in at an eighteenth century party. And Xemerius, the gargoyle demon who has been following Gwen since he caught her kissing Gideon in a church, offers advice on everything. Oh, yes. And of course there is Gideon, the Diamond. One minute he’s very warm indeed; the next he’s freezing cold. Gwen’s not sure what’s going on there, but she’s pretty much destined to find out.

WARNING: Spoilers will most likely pop up so read at your own peril

Anyone who has read my Ruby Red review (don't know if it was a review, more of a ramble) you will know that I adore this series. Also that I was ready for answers... I did not get them.

The second book follows straight on from the second book so I definitely recommend marathoning this series if you can. Starting in the church after the world's most awkward kiss, Gideon and Gwen have finally travelled back in time after their troubles in 1912 and now have to explain what happened to the big guys upstairs. Having read a few books since Ruby Red it was hard to get back into the swing of things. Especially since it did not seem that this book had much of an aim for the characters. Book 1 it was getting the blood and sorting Gwen out but this one seemed to just be the middle ground for the third book.

In this book we meet a couple new characters with the first being Xemerus, a gargoyle that was apparently tied to the earth by a wizard of some kind. At first I was really skeptical about this character. Ghosts? I can handle it. Invisible demon gargoyles? Bit weird. At first he seemed a bit clingy and annoying but soon enough he became one of the funniest characters in the book. His witty dialogue was hilarious and probably made more so because Gwen was the only one who could hear him. Another character was Gwen's grandfather who seems like a really cool guy, the complete opposite to her grandmother Lady Astra, I hope that he shows up in the third book.

Mainly the book revolves around the characters already introduces. Young Mr George makes an appearance as well as Paul and Lucy showing up again. Mostly it seemed to focus and develop the Gideon/Gwenyth love story. The author makes it really clear that the main character is just as confused as to why she likes Gideon after only two days. That is probably what made the soppy love scenes more bearable, even though they were a bit cheesy. Also the element of Charlotte and Gideon's past frustrated me. It made me hate Charlotte after her dinner with Raphael and Gideon as she blatently bad mouths Gwenyth. Eveyrthing is set up for a frosty relationship between the 3 of them though as Gideon admitted he had made Charlotte fall in love with him, obvious she was since she did his ironing, and planned to do the same with Gwenyth. It did make me laugh out loud though as Gwenyth replayed it to the soundtrack of 'Winner Takes It All' by ABBA.

Not much more is revealed about the secret and really all the meetings do with the count is confuse the audience more.He seems even creepier and I am convinced he is some kind of baddie but I really don't know since that creepy guy who thinks everyone is a demon showed up. Only the third book will clear this up.

It seems that the characters I hate cannot be trusted and the ones I love cannot be trusted. The narrative was still hilarious and with the introduction of new characters, as well as the development of established one, the plot has only thickened and I cannot wait to complete this trilogy.

The good news is that Emerald Green is out now. The bad news is that it's not out in the UK, is not in paperback and is really expensive. I have paperback copies of the first two and I will be damned if the entire series does not match so once again I am left waiting for the next book in this series.
