The story follows Kaylee who on a night out realises the psychological problems she has had since a kid may not be entirely psychological. Oh and her salvation comes in the form of a high school jock that she has a crush on- surprise, surprise.
It was a really interesting concept because I had never read a book about Banshee's before (or Bean Sidhes as the author insists on writing). The idea of someone knowing when someone will die was really interesting in this book and kind of creepy with the introduction of other supernatural creatures with a PhD in dead people. There were some cringy moments that made me laugh out loud, for example when Nash (jock lover boy) talks about the Banshee cry being beautiful but to humans it is just a scream. I did start laughing at the image of Kaylee just screaming like a lunatic and Nash loving it.
I liked the mystery element to this book. It seemed that people could not be trusted though that may just be me and my general distrust of all movies/tv shows/ books since no one ever stays dead any more. The book has a ticking time bomb as well since peoples lives are at risk and that tension was really great to read because you never knew what would happen next. Sometimes the emotive moments did not work though but that may have been due to my lack of total empathy for the characters.
The love story in this was far too insta-love for me to enjoy it. Within the first 100 pages they were in a teenage romance despite talking maybe 4 times about really morbid topics. They didn't even seem to get to know each other before it was "We are soulmates! Kaylee and Nash 4ever!" That was a slight let down and it meant that reading them together was both awkward (cause they didn't know each other) and sickeningly annoying (cause they didn't know each other plus puppy love).
Once you got past the characters with a Romeo and Juliet complex and the insistence of spelling Banshee like Bean Sidhe (despite the pronunciation being the same and it just making the supernatural creatures sound like a coffee drink) this book was decent. Considering it cost me less than £2 I was happy with it. Good if you want something light and spooky to read.
