Josie Griffin Is Not A Vampire by Heather Swain

Amazon Synopsis: Josie Griffin Is Not a Vampire When former good girl turned rebel Josie Griffin gets busted for revenge on her cheating boyfriend, she lands herself in anger management therapy. It could be worse: it could be juvvie, or she could be a zombie cheerleader like the rest of her former friends. But there's something strange about therapy and these are not normal kids.

Having to read at university kind of sucks the fun out of fiction. Your brain is so focused on retaining as much information as possible it starts to associate words on a page as a form of torture. It brings on the largest of reading slumps and Netflix takes priority as your mind tries to rest for a while. This book is the perfect book to get you out of a slump. It is just over two hundred pages of sap and giggles.

We follow Josie in this novel, a girl made bitter by her first love cheating on her. When she tries to get him back in a way that technically breaks the law but is understandable (Not condoning here. Stay in school kids) she is ordered to go to anger management counselling. There is what can only be described as a mess up with the paper work though and Josie soon finds that the anger management is either full of secrets she could never imagine or creepy, delusional psychopaths.

From the onset Josie had me laughing with her dry wit and sarcastic humour. It was obvious from the start that she was 1000% done with the world and was not afraid to show it.The quick wit did not just end with her character though. There was a constant stream of hilarity throughout and it just drew me out of my school reading vortex and threw me into some character development that left me feeling like I was becoming friends with these characters alongside Josie. There was no instant friendships that led to the sudden braiding of each others hair whilst sharing all their secrets. It was a slow process which led to the gradual development of both characters and relationships in such a way that, as a reader, I was not overwhelmed.

The plot in its most basic form was pretty predictable though. The elements of mystery that had been threaded into the story where sometimes sacrificed and not fully developed in favour of focusing on other aspects, such as building more on the characters relationship. The end 'twist' was quite a generic one in my opinion and I was a bit let down by this sudden, deflating plot twist.

This book is both an action filled classic paranormal tale and a parody of the genres tropes. It is light and heart felt with humour to make you want to soak up the characters and their adventures. I really hope there is a sequel because I am not done with this world one bit.
