Kamisama Hajimemashita (Kamisama Kiss) follows teenager Nanami Momozono, who  left homeless after her gambling father goes on the run from his huge debt. Everything seems to be going down hill for Nanami until she meets a strange man hiding from a dog in a tree. After saving him he offers her shelter at his home. Once Nanami follows the map he drew though she finds the local haunted, abandoned shrine. It is revealed though that Nanami has been marked as the new land God of this shrine and must work to restore the shrine alongside her hot/cold, cat-eared familiar Tomoe.

Kamisama Kiss is not too different from other anime in story or style, with the show bearing many similarities to fan favourites Fruits Basket and Inuyasha. Though it holds many similarities to more famous and older anime, Kamisama effortlessly blends the new world anime style and old Japanese folk tales into a pleasant coalition.

The art style of this anime features absolutely gorgeous pastel colours and soft hues that remind me of old Japanese art work. The floral imagery sprinkled throughout adds an adorable finish to the already cute animation. The style of this anime is just pleasing to the eyes; its aesthetics make this show easy to watch to the eye.

A large proportion of this anime is comedy and screwball style romance. The comedic timing of the dialogue and animation is perfect throughout. It is melodramatic but doesn't overwhelm you with too many overtly caricature moments that try and enhance the comedy. It is a perfect amount in my opinion. Sometimes anime can overdo the loud and slapstick humour moments meaning it detracts from the story and can become a little annoying or repetitive to watch.

My main criticism is that at times the story does not seem to be actually going anywhere. There does not seem to be an end game for the characters and this lack of common goal sometimes leaves the audience wondering what is happening. As there are few clear story arcs like in Attack on Titan or Bleach the series, though rarely, can become tedious and a bit all over the place. I am currently watching season two though so it may lead onto something more substantial.

Kamisama Kiss is a wonderful feel good anime that doesn't overwhelm you with romance nor does it milk the comedy. Instead it offers a wonderful, light watch that I would recommend to anyone who is not sure what they want to watch, is just getting into anime, or loves romantic comedies with a bit of action.

Season 2 of Kamisama Kiss is currently airing. I am not sure what options you will have in your country but be sure to check it out. Both the subbed and dubbed versions are great.
