Harriet Manners knows more facts that most. She knows that New York is the most populous city in the United States. She knows that its official motto is "Ever Upward". She knows that 28% of Americans believe we never landed on the moon.
But she knows nothing about modelling in the Big Apple, and how her family will cope with life stateside. Or how to "become a brand", as the models in New York put it. And, even more importantly, what to do when the big romantic gestures aren't coming from your boyfriend...
Does geek girl go too far this time?
She is back again. Plucked off my bookshelf just in time for a summer holiday by the pool. In my past reviews of this series I have said these are the perfect books for summer and I stand by this. Once again it took me one sitting to get through it and I just felt it was so light and wonderful to read in the sun.
Harriet once again finds herself balancing school and modelling once she gets her GCSE results and starts prepping for A levels only to be shipped off to New York by her parents new job. Whilst there though she may not be looking for a modelling career again it falls in her lap. Full of Harriet's quirky nature and some interesting facts we get a love triangle, more glamour, and a brand new landscape.
The writing style of this book is quite simple, which in my opinion makes it work. It is fast paced and comedic in a way that makes it a light easy read that your brain does not need too much help registering. There are some great descriptions in here but mostly it is solely Harriet's sporadic thought process. This narrative just makes for light laughter though as she struggles to be the composed woman she wants to be. This time round it does feature some more serious issues though about image and being true to yourself, which means the book has a really great internal message overall as well.
Character wise most of the favourites are absent for most of the novel. We do see a lot more of Nick
though, the boyfriend. Over the first two novels I did not really care for the romance aspect of the series because I did not feel we knew enough about Nick nor did he appear enough to really warrant Harriet's obsession with him. In the third book though he pops up and proves himself a noble character worth showing. There is more focus on their love story and the troubles with living so far from each other in a relationship. I liked the use of flashbacks to give context to the plot.
Perfect summer read series is the opinion I stand by. Each book gets better than the last. I am really looking forward to the next book and how it will progress after some events in this one. Go pick it up if you want a quick, easy, comedic read on a day off.
